The Rutgers Linguistics Department invites applications from qualified candidates interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Linguistics. The Department does not admit students for a Master's degree.
Requirements
GRE scores are not taken into account when reviewing applications.
The School of Graduate Studies requires applicants to provide TOEFL/IELTS scores if their undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country. Further details, and a list of exemptions, are provided here.
All applicants for graduate study at Rutgers must provide official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended, three letters of recommendation from people familiar with their work, a personal statement, and an application fee. Further details are available here.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to send a writing sample in support of their application. This could be a copy of a master's thesis, a term paper, a research report or even a challenging assignment report. A writing sample in a field related to linguistics would be acceptable if it demonstrates an ability to pursue serious scholarly inquiry.
