Marimar SuarezMajor: Linguistics and Sociology

How did you decide on your major?

When I was in high school, I realized that my favorite classes were language related. I started researching career fields that involved studying languages and found my way to Linguistics.

What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?

Linguistics opens so many doors. You can become an audiologist, a speech therapist, an educator, a forensic linguist. Within my major, I have learned the importance that the study of language plays in our society.

Do you have a favorite class/professor within your major?

My favorite class so far has been Pragmatics with Professor Syrett. I have never had a Professor that is so passionate about what they teach. Professor Syrett’s dedication and enthusiasm has shown me how interesting and relevant Pragmatics is in our everyday lives.

What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

I have worked in the Rutgers Phonolab under the supervision of Professor Shih. This was a great experience where I got to apply the concepts and content that I had learned in my Phonology class. I researched the stress pattern of such interesting languages such as Nek, Au, and Yakima Sahaptin.

What are your other Rutgers activities?

I am an Honors College Ambassador and an Honors College Ally. Besides being involved in the Honors College, I am currently the Vice-President of Rutgers Unión Estudiantil Puertorriqueña and the Secretary of Rutgers buildOn. I have also been a research assistant for the Graduate School of Education and part of the staff for Philadelphia Model United Nation 2018. However, the best experience that I have had so far has been being an Orientation Leader this past summer. I grew so much both as a student and a leader.

What are your plans following graduation?

I am planning on applying to the English as a Second Language Five-Year Masters Program in the Graduate School of Education. After graduating, I hope to go back home to Puerto Rico and become an English teacher or continue my studies in order to enter academia.
