Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Linguistics?
A: Linguistics is the systematic study of human language. Linguists
are interested in discovering general principles for how language
works, how language develops in children, how it is used and how
it changes through time. Information about the various subdisciplines
can be found in the short guide to the
field of linguistics provided by the Linguistic Society of
America. The best way to learn what is available at Rutgers is
to consult the webpages of department
faculty as well as descriptions of courses offered by the
department.
Q: How do I apply to the Rutgers Linguistics doctoral program?
A: Applications may be requested from our
department administrator or electronically.
Q: How do I find 18 Seminary Place?
A: By consulting this map of the Rutgers-New
Brunswick Campus.
Q: What sort of career opportunities are available in Linguistics?
A: Please consult this short
treatise on the subject put together by our undergraduate
director, Prof. Roger Schwarzschild.
Q: What's it like living in...New Jersey?!
A: New Brunswick is within easy travelling distance from New York,
Princeton, the Jersey Shore, innumerable parks (they call it the
Garden State for a reason), and other places worth visiting when
we aren't busy working (!!). The weather is a little rainy, but
overall quite nice. It's gorgeous here in the summer.
