Graduate Program at Linguistics PDF Print E-mail

Each year the department of linguistics admits about six or seven students to its Ph.D. program; students should complete the requirements within five years.  Because we expect our students to make substantial original contributions to their chosen field of linguistics, graduate students do independent research early and often. Our faculty has a wide range of interests and specializations, and we welcome the perspectives and new ideas that graduate students contribute to our community.

Graduate students participate in all of the aspects of intellectual life at Rutgers Linguistics, and generate a few of their own. Many pursue the Certificate in Cognitive Science, and participate in the research groups . They have also formed the Linguistics Graduate Student Association which addresses graduate student needs and occasionally publishes collections of papers.

New Brunswick, NJ, located less than an hour’s travel from New York, is itself a hospitable place for graduate students to live and work. It is a hub of the local music and restaurant scene and offers lots of relatively cheap dining and entertainment options, including cuisines from all over the world. Some of our graduate students live on campus, or in off-campus apartments right in town, and some choose to live in the nearby towns of Highland Park or Piscataway, which offer a more suburban feel.

Alumni of Rutgers Linguistics have gone on to hold faculty and research positions at universities in the US and abroad. Some have applied their linguistics and cognitive science training to research in private industry. Still others have gone on to work in higher education, writing, or other indirectly related fields. For a list of their current positions as well as downloadable copies of their dissertations, please see our alumni page.
