Frequently Asked Questions
| Q: |
What is Linguistics? |
| A: |
Linguistics is the systematic study of human language. Linguists
are interested in discovering general principles for how language
works, how language develops in children, how it is used and how
it changes through time. Information about the various subdisciplines
can be found in the short guide to the
field
of linguistics provided by the Linguistic Society of America.
The best way to learn what is available at Rutgers
is to consult the webpages of department faculty
as well as descriptions of courses
offered by the department. |
| Q: |
What's it like living in...New Jersey?! |
| A: |
New
Brunswick lies within easy reach of New
York, Princeton,
the Jersey
Shore, and (it is the Garden State) innumerable
parks.
The
weather is splendidly variable. Winter is often warm-ish,
with few weeks of cold snap in the new year. August can be Venusian, but
trees flower along the avenues in crisp spring, and fall comes with
snails and fog on the wavering way back to winter. Here is a
local bridge, seen from the Raritan, in January dusk.
